Japan is becoming more cashless, but many situations still require cash. Here is how much to carry and how to balance it with cards.

Where cash is still needed

Small restaurants, street stalls, some shrines and temples, and local shops can be cash-only. Keeping a few thousand to ¥10,000 in cash on hand is wise.

Using cards and IC cards

Major credit cards work at larger stores, hotels and chains. IC cards like Suica are handy for trains and some shops. Combine cash and cards as needed.

When to exchange
